Welcome from the Mayor

Kamloopsians take pride in describing their City as “Our Place in the Sun”.  We are known for our long, hot, dry summers and mild winters.  Our new sports and recreation facilities provide everyone with the opportunity to maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle.  There are a wide variety of outstanding venues throughout the City.  We pride ourselves in being known as Canada’s Tournament Capital.   Kamloops hosts numerous tournaments and events each year.  The tourism generated by these events significantly contribute to the local economy.

Over the years the City has worked at creating a diversified economy.  Kamloops was hard hit during the recession of the 1980’s and learned the importance of diversification.    Though natural resources still play a big role in our economy, Kamloops generates economic activity through government, health and education sectors, small-scale business, tourism and value added manufacturing.  With the completion of the runway at Fulton field and the addition of Westjet, Kamloops has opened itself up to new markets.   The City continues to work with Venture Kamloops to implement their strategic plan to attract new businesses and to improve the success of existing businesses.   Kamloops continues to maintain a stable economy.

Kamloops is proud to be home to Thompson Rivers University (TRU).  TRU has evolved from a community college, to a university-college and now to a full fledged provincial university.  TRU is a leader in hosting international students with over 70 countries represented on campus.  With the recent announcement of a 3-year fully accredited Law School, TRU will continue to receive national and international recognition.

Kamloops continues on its path of diversification and sustainability.  The City of Kamloops envisions Kamloops as one of the leaders in economic development in the Southern Interior and we welcome your business to “Our Place in the Sun”.
